Project Calypso
This project was a partnership between NC State University College of Design and SAS Institute in the Fall of 2015.
The purpose of this project was to design a new dashboard for a data steward to generate a unique customer persona based on collected data. By collecting market data and performing a preliminary cleaning, the data steward uses the dashboard as a tool to reach a target progress level before sharing with other team collaborators. By building data integrity through filtering information based on relevance, combining data sheets, setting comprehensive standards and permissions for efficient collaboration, and performing preliminary cleaning on major errors, the data steward generate a unique customer persona to represent a new target audience.
In collaboration with Lisa Wong and Blair Torres

The Sandbox is a dashboard screen where a steward can view all current assignments (plus their corresponding stats and updates), or begin a new project file. Here, Malory is defining parameters to filter relevant information from the data lake into her new project, “Corp_Persona.”

After the data is filtered by relevance, Malory shifts to the Node View of the data; Calypso has automatically identified relationships and connections between the two sources of data, MegaCorp and MicroCorp, which are then linked according to their level of similarity.

In the Node View, Malory can explore links between nodes to make informed decisions about merging.

Once nodes merge to create a combined dataset, Malory can establish standards for future project members.

In, the Bubble View allows Malory can identify user input errors and address them accordingly.

Once the project has reached a progress threshold, Malory sets permissions for the team and passes the file on.
Persona + Scenario
Malory Pierce, Data Steward
As a data steward, Malory is concerned with data integrity: filtering and sorting data based on relevance, investigating and fixing major errors, overseeing the use and interaction of the data by others. She champions efficiency and prefers visual problem-solving.
With its recent acquisition of MicroCorp, MegaCorp has tasked Malory with combining their current data sets with those of the smaller company’s available information; the project goal is to create an updated and accurate buyer persona for the purpose of acquiring, growing, and retaining customers. Through filtering, merging, and correcting the data, Malory must reach a suitable progress level threshold (in this case, 70% or higher) before passing it on to the next collaborative team member for further cleaning and processing.
Journey Map + Task Flow
The User Journey Map details the experience of Malory, a data steward, using Calypso during a typical work day.
The task flow denotes the step-by-step capabilities of the data-processing program, Calypso.
